Born in the United States, Cauleen Smith established her practice through experimental filmmaking, gaining significant recognition for her 1998 feature film Drylongso. She has since developed a multidisciplinary career that bridges cinema, installation art, and academia, currently serving as a professor in the Department of Art at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Smith’s work frequently utilizes short films, video, and immersive installations to address themes of identity, history, and social consciousness. Her practice is characterized by a commitment to experimental storytelling and the visual representation of Black female perspectives, often blending archival material with contemporary narratives.
Her international profile continues to expand, with recent recognition including a major survey exhibition titled Afflict the Comfortable, Comfort the Afflicted at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, scheduled for late 2025. This presentation marks her first major exhibition on the African continent.
