Lempertz to Offer 70 Works from Margulies Photography Collection in June Auction
On May 27, 2026, Lempertz announced the consignment of 70 photographic works from the Margulies Collection of Miami collector Martin Z. Margulies for its spring auction. The selection includes pieces by Lewis Hine, Berenice Abbott, Walter Rosenblum, Danny Lyon, Irving Penn, Lee Friedlander, Garry Winogrand, Stephen Shore, and Thomas Struth, with estimates such as €20/30,000 for Lyon’s 76-image 'Conversation with the Dead' and €15/20,000 for a 1948 Penn Cuzco portrait. The Evening Sale on June 6 features Ólafur Eliasson’s 56-part 'The Island Series', while the Day Sale includes additional Margulies lots alongside works by Andy Warhol and Adam Fuss.
The Signal
The second installment of the Margulies Collection at Lempertz indicates sustained collector demand for mid-century American photography centered on social documentation and the New Topographics. Estimates attached to lots by Penn, Struth, and the 'fotoform' group provide reference points for pricing in humanist and Düsseldorf School photography. The consignment of Eliasson and Warhol pieces alongside historical material shows how institutions are positioning post-war photography within broader contemporary contexts.
