Gallerie dell'Accademia Hosts Leiko Ikemura Exhibition for Venice Glass Week 2026
The Gallerie dell'Accademia will present the exhibition 'Leiko Ikemura: TransLucent - The Form of Light' from September 10 to November 22, 2026, as part of the ninth edition of The Venice Glass Week. The show, supported by the Ikemura Foundation, places sculptures by the Japanese artist Leiko Ikemura in dialogue with the museum's permanent collection across the ground floor, Palladian courtyard and first floor. Several works were produced at a Murano glassworks for the occasion and will be shown alongside paintings and sculptures by Carpaccio, Giambattista Tiepolo, Canova and Titian. The series Sleeping Heads forms a central element, engaging with Venetian female iconography beginning with Titian's Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple.
The Signal
Ikemura, born in Tsu in 1951, has worked since the 1980s across painting, drawing, watercolour, terracotta, glass and ceramics to address themes of transition, cross-culturalism and the emancipation of the female body. The placement of her monumental sculptures within the historic spaces of the Gallerie dell'Accademia signals continued institutional interest in artists who bridge Eastern and Western traditions through material experimentation. For collectors and curators, the project underscores the growing visibility of glass as a medium in major museum programmes and highlights Ikemura's established position in European institutional contexts.
