Kunsthaus Zürich Stages First Swiss Museum Retrospective of Vilhelm Hammershøi
The Kunsthaus Zürich will present 'Vilhelm Hammershøi. The Eye That Listens' from July 3 to October 25, 2026. The exhibition is the first comprehensive museum show in Switzerland devoted to the Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) and features his sparse interiors, cityscapes and landscapes. It places the works in context with pieces by Jacobus Vrel, Adolph Menzel and Michaël Borremans. The show is curated by Jonas Beyer and Sandra Gianfreda in cooperation with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid.
The Signal
The retrospective highlights Hammershøi’s reduced palette and recurring motifs, qualities that align his practice with later artists such as Giorgio Morandi and signal sustained collector interest in understated modernist interiors. Inclusion of musical instruments and biographical ties to musicians underscores a dimension of his work that institutions and private buyers increasingly value for its atmospheric depth. The accompanying catalogue with contributions from multiple scholars will be available at the July 3 opening, providing new reference material for curators and the market.
